Why Do We Do It?
Long Story Short,
We Want To Make A Change.
Why
The need to change
The effects of human activity on climate have increasingly been on the agendas of government and corporate policy makers in recent years.
Companies face stricter requirements regarding the emission of pollutants and particulates. The standards for this have been firmly established in European and national laws and regulations for years and are now increasingly being translated into everyday practice.
Construction and transportation companies must improve their ability to report detailed data on emissions and make efforts to reduce emissions. In line with implementing the climate agreement, the consequences become more compelling for companies and have a major impact on being able and allowed to conduct normal business operations in the future.
Determining and interpreting this data is complex and time-consuming and requires new expertise and skill from companies and employees.
Insight, Strategy and Change
Determining and interpreting emissions data is very complex, time-consuming and requires new expertise and skill from companies and employees.
To support companies, Emission Insight has developed a unique calculation model that allows quick, reliable and easy calculation of CO2, NOx and PM emissions for all types of vehicles and machinery using simple data that each company, work planner and planner can fill in.
Also, through an API link, the calculation model can calculate emissions based on companies' normal planning software, making this information available without additional actions.
The information allows companies, together with clients, to choose the working method with the lowest emissions of harmful particles. Companies can also quickly and easily obtain the impact of cleaner machinery or more environmentally friendly work methods.
Our goal is to make what's complicated simple
Emission Insight aims to put the complicated at the fingertips of companies so they can make informed contributions to a better world.
Our goal here is that every employee within a company, without virtually any training or expertise, can make a reliable calculation in no time and interpret it correctly. For this purpose, all input parameters are reduced to things that every planner or work planner knows from his or her daily practice.
In addition, an API of the model is available that allows the calculations to be computed and added directly to a company's planning data, providing them with the estimated emissions immediately. The link is designed so that no additional work or actions are required from employees in the company. This saves enormous costs and time spent by employees but at the same time gives companies all the information they must have according to European and national laws and regulations.
How did we do it
The model stems from discussions with the Dutch government about making the vehicles and machinary more sustainable and the transition to zero-emission or low-emission construction.
Because the government and various research agencies lacked a unified and reliable way to estimate emissions from construction equipment, the founders of Emission Insight began working on the calculation model in 2019.
In mid-2020, the model was extensively tested based on thousands of data points from actual activities and fuel consumption of machines from companies throughout the Netherlands. After the test period the model was validated by Panteia.
This validation was completed in early 2021 with a positive assessment of the model's reliability and accuracy.
How the model works
For the model; the type of machines to be deployed, the characteristics of these machines and the specific characteristics of the engines, are essential inputs that must be specified by the user or planning.
In addition to the specifications of the machines, it is also necessary to enter how the machines will be used. This 'Workload' varies for each machine and for each project. Inputs here are the total travel distance, the time on site and the percentage of this time where the machine is used for work and finally the estimation of the load on the engine during the work.
Based on all inputs, the corresponding emissions are calculated.
The outcome of the model shows the estimated consumption of fuel for driving (total and liters per 100km) and for performing operations (total and per hour).
An accurate estimate, within a few percent of reality, of total emissions of CO2, NOx and PM is also provided for each machine.
